On Liberation Day, Slot Loevestein invites visitors to sit down together at the Freedom Supper. In a place where stories of freedom, justice and history come together, meeting is central. For the first time, Loevestein is joining the National Committee 4 and 5 May's national Freedom Meals. Visitors can join to share freedom soup; eating together is the start of a conversation. About what freedom means, then and now.
Loevestein as a place of significance
"For centuries this place has stood for freedom and justice," explains director Jenny Doest, "which makes Slot Loevestein an obvious location for this gathering. From medieval castle to state prison and part of the Dutch Waterline, the history of Loevestein shows how vulnerable and valuable freedom is."

Jenny Doest herself will also be present on this day to provide the welcome address. There will also be a musical contribution and a reading of a May 5 poem. After the Freedom Supper, visitors can explore the castle and the War Law exhibition. This will deepen the conversation about freedom with stories from the past.
Conversation and connection
The Freedom Supper is an initiative of the National Committee 4 and 5 May and is organised throughout the Netherlands. By eating together and talking to each other, new connections are created and awareness grows that freedom can never be taken for granted.
Freedom Soup by Janny van der Heijden
The 2026 Freedom Soup was developed by culinary expert Janny van der Heijden. Her recipe forms the connecting link between all Freedom Meals in the country. Her recipe goes beyond just eating together. It symbolises freedom. Janny deliberately chose a white soup based on white beans, ginger and coconut milk. "The white refers to the dove of peace and the white flag. With toppings such as pumpkin seeds, basil, chilli oil or fried onions, everyone can add their own colour and meaning to it," says Janny.
