During his imprisonment in Slot Loevestein , Hugo de Groot studied and wrote a lot. Books are brought and retrieved in a large book chest. As controls slacken, his vrouw Maria van Reigersberch and maid Elsje van Houweningen devise a daring plan: Hugo escapes in the book chest!

This Ascension weekend, our museum guides will tell you all about Hugo and his spectacular escape. Who was Hugo de Groot? Why was he imprisoned? What was his leven like in state prison Loevestein? And why were his vrouw and children locked up with him?
