The Dalempoort is the only city gate left. Originally, there were four gates. The Kanselpoort, Arkelpoort and Waterpoort had to make way for growing traffic. The 'strong' story goes that Jan van Arkel could pull himself up, horse and all, on the beams of the Arkelpoort. His nickname was therefore Jan the Strong!
The Dalempoort is from 1597 and has a turret with a clock. Today, a footpath leads under the gate to the Merwede. If you follow the path, you have a good view of the city walls and corn mill De Hoop.
