Visit the Netherlands' biggest fortress and most famous castle in one day! You will walk through the fortress, take a ferry or water taxi across the river and visit Slot Loevestein, from which Hugo de Groot escaped in a book chest. City tour Gorinchem

With the City Walk (3 km) you can visit the highlights of Gorinchem on your own, using our comprehensive leaflet. This leaflet includes a map with directions, photos and background information of the sights. The route starts at the Gorcums Museum at Grote Markt 17.

Crossing to Loevestein: 14.05 hrs.

Buiten de Waterpoort, Riveer will take you by regular ferry or water taxi to Slot Loevestein.

Visit Slot Loevestein

Slot Loevestein is an imposing 14th-century castle, beautifully located in the river landscape and surrounded by nature. The castle has an important history as a medieval toll castle, fortress and state prison. Its most famous prisoner was Hugo de Groot. He managed to escape from Loevestein in a book chest in 1621. Loevestein is now a national monument and museum. The complex was completely restored in the 20th century. The earthen ramparts, double moats, powder tower, arsenal, commander's house, tavern and the street with soldiers' houses take you back centuries in time. In the castle, you can listen to short stories.

From Slot Loevestein, sail back to Gorinchem by ferry or water taxi with Riveer.
