Summer is here! Sun, beach and water; that's all you need in these summery temperatures. But where are the best places to swim in Gorinchem? We list them here for you.
Beach Buiten de Waterpoort
Gorinchem is not only a beautiful fortified town, it also has a real city beach! Buiten de Waterpoort, you will find several beaches where you can swim in the river Merwede. This city park, just outside the ramparts, also has picnic areas, children's play equipment and sports facilities. Got hungry from all the action? At the Boulevard they have the best fries in Gorinchem. Or settle down on the terrace of Stoute Karel or Élan Dine & Drinks for a top wine with a drink or dinner.
Note: Buiten de Waterpoort is not an official swimming location. The water here is not controlled like at recognised swimming spots. Be aware of strong currents and heavy shipping traffic. Swimming here is therefore entirely at your own risk.
Lingebos
The Lingebos in Vuren is more than just a forest. It also has a 10-hectare swimming lake with several swimming zones. So children can spelen safely on the beach and swim in shallow water. You can buy your snack, drink or ice cream at Het Kraaiennest. But there are also concrete slabs where you can BBQ. So load up that cooler!
The bathing water in the Lingebos is monitored because blue-green algae can develop in the heat. So check in advance whether you can swim safely on zwemwater.nl.
The Wheel
Just outside the fortress of Gorinchem is Het Wiel in Dalem. This deep lake was left over after a dike breach and is located behind the Waaldijk, at no. 5. The dike is closed off for works; you can therefore get there temporarily via an unpaved path in Beatrixlaan (past the corner house). In summer, you can sunbathe, swim or play ball in the grass here. You should also watch out for blue-green algae here, as it is still water.
Caribabad
Don't like natural pools? The Caribabad is the swimming pool in Gorinchem. This indoor swimming paradise is open in all seasons. In summer in the outdoor pool with paddling pools, sunbathing area and play equipment, and all year round in the tropical indoor pool. Both are also possible, of course. With its many slide lanes, whirlpools and Turkish baths, this is the ideal place for a whole day of relaxation and water fun. The Caribabad is also the place for swimming lessons, baby swimming, aqua jogging or one of the other sports activities.
