Discover the cultural sites of the inner city

Hartje Gorcum is not just about shopping, restaurants and terraces. Behind historical facades, in atmospheric streets and hidden studios, you will find a surprisingly creative side of the city. Artists, makers and gallery owners give the city centre colour and character. And with Culture Month coming up in June, this is the time to discover those creative places.

From painting and photography to artisan weaving and driftwood art, in Gorinchem you don't just walk into a shop, but often a story.

Creativity on the Langendijk and in the Burgstraat

In the city centre, you will find several studios and galleries where art does not feel distant, but comes close.

On the Langendijk at Galerie Kunst bij Karel , you regularly meet artists themselves. During exhibitions, they enjoy talking about their work, inspiration and techniques. Art echt lives here among the visitors.

Studio Roodenburg also shows how special crafts can be. In Jolanda Roodenburg's weaving studio, you will discover traditional weaving on large floor looms. A centuries-old craft that feels totally contemporary again.

Further down Burgstraat, it feels like walking from studio to studio. Galerie Sterke Kunst is not just about art on the wall, but also about meeting people. Owner Karen Bruggeman has turned her atelier into a place where people walk in for inspiration, a conversation or just some peace and quiet.

Hobby Atelier/Gallery Seven & Twenty also brings colour to the city with abstract art, wall hangings and technical artworks around aviation, cars and cityscapes.

Art with a story

At Atelier Ruwaard , everything revolves around word and image. Here, Mark and Ariena combine driftwood art, poetry, photography and design into unique creations. Their love for beachcombing originated on Curaçao, where washed-up wood formed the basis for art objects that can now be seen in Gorinchem.

Culture between history and ramparts

The combination of art and history makes Gorinchem extra special.

In the Hendrick Hamel Museum Museum, old masters and contemporary art come together. The museum not only tells the story of Hendrick Hamel, but also shows during exhibitions how historical art inspires new generations of creators.

The Grote Kerk Gorinchem also provides an impressive backdrop during exhibitions. With the theme Sound and colour. The beauty of music artists connect music and visual art in a unique way.

Even the old fortress locations are getting creative. At the Kruitmagazijnen Gorinchem, artist Kim Verschoor explores what contemporary threats look like in a world of social media, technology and digital stimuli.
