Poterne

On 5 October 1811, Napoleon and his vrouw Marie Louise visited Gorinchem. During his inspection ride on horseback over the Gorcum vestingwallen, he gave orders for various improvements to be carried out. One of those improvements was the construction of this poterne.

A poterne is a covered passageway through a main wall. The poterne made it possible to bring cannons and soldiers more quickly to the fortress' pre-defences. Before, they had to walk and sail from the Dalempoort. So a big improvement!
