In Molenstraat, Matthijs Aelbertz. and his vrouw Mariken Kolff founded an orphanage in 1556. Remaining childless themselves, they stipulated that the house would remain an orphanage even after their death. In the alley next to Huize Matthijs-Marijke there is still a 'foundling hatch' in the wall. The story goes that newborn babies were abandoned here. Even today, the house is still used by a care institution.
