De naaimachine

You are now standing in Burgstraat, our oldest shopping street. The mural recalls the first sewing machine shop in the Netherlands. It was here in Gorinchem, more than 150 years ago. And the shop still exists. Youngest member of the family, Yvonne van Keekem tells:

"My great-great-grandfather, tailor Johannes Cornelis, went to a fashion fair in Paris in 1870. There he saw a Singer sewing machine. In those days something completely new. He was so enthusiastic that he decided to import the machine into the Netherlands. It was a hit."

Since then, the shop has passed from father to son or daughter. And all the expertise is carefully passed on. Enne: do you notice anything else about this sewing machine? Again that modern symbol on this antique device.
