The new Waterliniepad is a 350-kilometre hiking trail along two former defence lines: the Stelling van Amsterdam and the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The walking days are steeped in history and take you through UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And although you are always close to the randstad, you are constantly walking through beautiful nature.
Long-distance footpath
No other Long Distance Walking Trail (LAW) highlights the defence lines as well as this trail. The many forts, bunkers, locks and canals tell the story of water as an ally in the defence of the Netherlands. The forts were closed to the public for years, but have now opened their doors. Many of the 95 forts you pass have been turned into welcoming stopping places where you can go for a drink, a bite to eat or an overnight stay.
