Batterij onder Brakel

This 5-hectare fort island from 1879-1884 with a bombproof barracks lies in front of the fortresses of Loevestein and Woudrichem to prevent them from coming under fire. In the vanished front wall were the emplacements for artillery (batteries). The fort also defended the Waal, the southern Waal dike and the floodplains on this side of the river. Together with the Batterij onder Poederoijen, it also had to defend the inundation fields in the Bommelerwaard; these are the polders between Maas and Waal that were flooded when there was a threat of war.
