Vesting Woudrichem

Woerkum, as the fortified inhabitants call Woudrichem, is a sturdy fortress lying on the Merwede and has good neighbours such as Gorinchem Fortress and Slot Loevestein. This fortified town is worth your visit. Wander along the centuries-old facades, visit the historische haven and contemplate this history on a nice terrace. The surrounding area is excellent for walking and cycling and you can make a round trip along the entire Vestingdriehoek by ferry.

As a fortified town, Woudrichem was part of both the Old and New Dutch Waterline. Together with Gorinchem fortress, it sealed off the river Waal from the enemy. Artillery supported fortress Gorinchem, Slot Loevestein and Fort Vuren. Much has been preserved from that time, such as bastions, ravelins, a Guardhouse, a bombproof arsenal, the Marechaussee Barracks and the waterworks outside the gate.
