Fort bij Asperen was part of the New Dutch Waterline, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The fort is a so-called tower fort that was built from 1840 onwards. Tower forts were often built in the New Dutch Waterline. This tower is made of heavy masonry - the outer walls are 1.5 metres thick - and has a diameter of 33 metres.

The fort consists of three floors and the layout has three shells. At the core is a 5-metre diameter light and air shaft, which passes through all floors. Around this is a ring-shaped room: the corridor.

In winter, the tower fort is closed due to the overwintering of bats. From mid-April to October, the tower fort can be visited. The catering establishments at the Fort bij Asperen remain open as usual.
