Kruitmagazijnen
Contact
Scattered across the fortress were several gunpowder magazines. Built in the late 18th century, these kruitmagazijnen took their current form in 1882. Gunpowder is highly explosive and an explosion would cause a huge disaster. The 'bombproof' gunpowder warehouses therefore withstood shelling with mortar bombs; large iron balls filled with gunpowder.
Nowadays, surprising exhibitions can be seen in the Kruitmagazijnenhouses. In changing exhibitions, top artists show beautiful modern objects, photos, jewellery, textiles, glass art and ceramics. Gorinchem is a city with a predilection for abstract-geometric art. More than a hundred sculptures and statues in public spaces make Gorinchem the visual city of the Netherlands.
