De Oude Doelen or het Doelhuys consists of two wings (1589) running parallel to the street under gable roofs between stepped gables. There is a stair tower at the rear, and a protruding side wing on the Molenstraat side. The building has unplastered facades with an Empire-style entrance. At the rear (just walk down Revetsteeg to see this), the relief arches above the windows are visible.
Het Doelhuys was so called because there were shooting targets at the back of the garden. This building was the 'clubhouse' of the militia; the archers practised shooting in the long back garden and had a role in the city's initial defence until a state garrison arrived. het Doelhuys was also used to receive distinguished guests. Marshal Wirtz stayed there during his stay in Gorinchem in the Year of Disaster.
