The most famous castle in the Netherlands
In the primeval Dutch river landscape, where Maas and Waal meet, knight Dirc Loef van Horne had his castle built in 1361. Then ideal for levying toll, nowadays ideal for a day out! You can also use our castle as a party location, conference location or for an overnight stay. On 26 July 2021, Loevestein was placed on the World Heritage List by Unesco as part of the Dutch Waterline.
The rich history of Slot Loevestein spans some 650 years and can be divided into three periods: the Middle Ages, the State Prison and the Dutch Waterline. The most striking period is undoubtedly the state prison, from which Hugo de Groot escaped in his famous book chest!

In the castle, the outer bailey and the soldier village, there is plenty for everyone to do. With your personal key, you can explore the castle, start presentations and activate games. In the museum, you can learn more about Hugo de Groot and his ideas, the Middle Ages and the function of Slot Loevestein in the Dutch Waterline. New in the fortress is the climbing course, where the kids can have fun and reenact Hugo de Groot's escape!
