We call it a vending machine. That idea probably came from Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. From there, the phenomenon spread to other countries.
Did you know that you used to pull cigarette packets 'out of the wall' the same way? The change was stuck to the packet with a piece of tape. Can you imagine? The cigarette seller sat gluing coins night after night.
In the 1950s, automatisms with croquettes, frikadellen, hamburgers and balls were unprecedentedly popular. Only to disappear from the scene again in the 1960s, except in the Netherlands.
