Altenawal
Contact
The Altenawal is part of the Gorinchem fortress, which is also part of the Old and New Dutch Waterline. The rampart is part of the southern defensive wall of Gorinchem and connects bastion VI and bastion VII. At the site of the former Waterpoort, there is now a coupure (break) in the rampart; two brick retaining walls, fitted with bulkhead rebates.
Standing on the Altenawal, you can see on the other side the fortified town of Woudrichem with its low plump church tower. Slightly to the left, between the trees, you discern the towers of Slot Loevestein. This view has hardly changed since the Disaster Year 1672. You feel like you're back in time here; this place breathes the history of the water line!
