You can see the Grote Toren Tower from afar. It is therefore the most striking building in the fortress. Even more fun is climbing the tower yourself and experiencing the unforgettable view.
Story
This late-medieval tower naturally belonged to the Catholic St. Maartenskerk in 1572. That was so badly damaged during the siege of 1813/1814 that it was demolished. Now a 19th-century church building stands there; the Grote Kerk. The tower is now called the Grote Toren. And big the tower still is, not to say grand! Halfway through the church building, on the side of the nunnery, an underground passageway is said to have once run to the Agnietenklooster, so that the nuns could go to church unseen. But this story has never been proven.
