The name says it all: this Tolhuis was built in 1598 on the southern bastion to collect toll. All ships passing by Gorinchem had to pay toll here. The Tolhuis therefore has a magnificent view over the Merwede!
In 1869, the Tolhuis became an artillery barracks. After that, it had many other functions: military hospital, school, library, reading room, employment office and office. It is now a National Monument with various functions.
MONUMENT AND BED
The stair tower of the Tolhuis stands on the waterfront and rises just above everything else. The tower is furnished as a Monument and Bed: a fully furnished and equipped holiday home for two people. You can rent it for at least two nights. A unique experience: stunning views over the Merwede during the day and a fantastic place to watch the stars at night!
