Plan your route to Bastion IX

This bastion is also part of the eastern defensive wall of Gorinchem. It comprises a bastion(bastion IX) with a wet moat in front of it. On the bastion's tèrre square is a bombproof brick military laboratory.

From the Oostgracht you can see a small watercourse leading away, with a small bridge over it. The little water is the raveline moat. To the right is an indented point of the zigzagging glacis, to the left the raveline. Today, the ravelijn is used for allotments. A glacis is a pre-defence strip running around the outer edges of the canals. It is now densely overgrown with willow trees and allotments. Marshal Wirtz initially had only the ravelins constructed, which were then about half the size of today's. The original layout of this raveline had a gun platform in the point and banquettes for riflemen on the wings. And a bowl for docking with a boat.
