That military function began as early as 1572. It was the construction start of the fortress in the war against the Spaniards. In 1600, the fortress was ready, with thick walls and defences. Meanwhile, the Spaniards left us alone.

Yet the hassle continues and Gorinchem becomes a garrison town in 1672. This is necessary because now the French are advancing. The soldiers stationed there manage to keep the French out for the time being.

In 1813, we were part of the French Empire after all. Napoleon now used the fortress against the Prussians. He visited Gorinchem to discuss this. Some say he did so in de Hoofdwacht. But whether that is true? In any case, he missed the kitchen.

In 1967, the eastern rampart was abandoned as a fortification. And thus ends the history of Gorinchem as a military fortified town.
