Waterline route
The forts of the New Dutch Waterline are hidden gems in the landscape. With this route, you will discover the forts and fortresses in the south of the waterline. From Vesting Gorinchem you cycle to Fort Vuren (due to works on the dike, you are temporarily diverted via the Graaf Reinaldweg). You then cross the river Waal by car/cycle ferry to Slot Loevestein, a fortress in both the Old and New Dutch Waterline. The tour continues past the batteries of Brakel and Poederoijen, Vesting Woudrichem, Fort Altena, Fort Bakkerskil and Fort Steurgat.
Between Junctions 69 and 74, you may want to turn off to see Fort Giessen. Almost all locations have lovely terraces (in high season) where you can relax with lunch, coffee or a drink.
Tip: You can hire bicycles and E-bikes at VVV Gorinchem.
